All roads in this tranquil artists’ village lead to a decades-old hotel where a friendly Canadian owner, Debbie Stewart, breaks into a huge smile and says coyly to visitors, “Welcome to the Hotel California.” Next door, mission bells toll, and across the street at a bar called Tequila Sunrise, the song “Hotel California” blares from a jukebox for the fifth time in two hours. If this isn’t the real thing, it’s darned close to the Hotel California of one of rock’s greatest hits. The song “Hotel California” was made famous by the Eagles. Band member Don Henley, a Texan from Linden who co-wrote the song, has denied any connection – inspiration or otherwise – to this charming place in Todos Santos. He insists the song was inspired by the turbulent times of the 1970s, by the chaos and fast life of Southern California. But a funny thing happened since the denial: Hotel California is more popular than ever. “They believe this is the hotel, the same one from the song,” Ms. Stewart says. “It’s not what we’re selling here. They ask me, and I say I don’t know.” Daily, about 300 visitors arrive individually or by tour bus from Los Cabos and gawk at the burnt red and dark green building with wide arches, a colorful lobby and a large pool. Some simply stare. Others touch the hotel in awe and then take a seat at the bar, remembering their past, moved by the bottles of tequila dancing in their heads. The song plays endlessly. All travelers seem to be gripped by nostalgia and what appears to be the faint smell of colitas (marijuana buds), or maybe it’s just my imagination….
